Welcome To
Batis Birding

Professional worldwide, tailormade bird watching and wildlife safaris

Come birding with the Braine's and explore Namibia and Angola with us. Our bird watching expertise stretches from the arid Namib Desert to the broadleaved woodlands of the Caprivi and the forests of Central Angola. We offer set departures to Angola and Namibia as well as custom tours, tailor made to meet your exact requirements.

We have handpicked specialized local guides from some of the world's most exotic destinations. The reason for using these local guides is to support the interest and stimulate these people in bird watching and the spinoffs from tourism, and the subsequent generation of capital from this. Our aim is to promote tourism through bird watching and to have, in the future, more impoverished rural communities benefiting from this.

We are committed to provide an English-speaking tour leader on each of our bird watching safaris plus one local guide on all tailor made safaris.

We ensure good standard accommodation with en suite facilities where possible and rustic wild camping in the more remote areas such as Angola.

The areas in which Batis Birding undertake their safaris are always well researched and visited so as to provide the best opportunities of locating all the birds and wildlife within each region.

We schedule our safaris around the best seasons of the year for the most productive bird watching.

We support the protection of endangered bird species and are involved in several training projects within Namibia, and are presently looking at means to become more involved in Angolan conservation projects.

Steve Braine – Owner and Guide

Steve Braine has recently taken the Batis Birding reigns from John Lötter and has been involved with ornithology and natural history within Namibia from a very young age, contributing invaluable data to Namibian Ornithology.

During the past 30 years, he has also captured and ringed (banded) raptors and has contributed and published several articles on distribution and other aspects of ornithology in popular journals and magazines. He has discovered several new butterfly species as well as a species of desert beetle, Onymacris brainei in the northern Namib Desert as well as a sub-species of the Speckled Burrowing Skink Typlocontias puctatissimus brainei along the Skeleton Coast.

After a three-year stint doing geological exploration work in the Namib Desert, he left to study Conservation. Thereafter he joined the Namibian conservation department and spent 9 years in the Skeleton Coast Park, and two years in the eastern Caprivi Strip as a ranger/conservation official.

Steve, his wife Louise and his two sons then moved to Hobatere Lodge, a wildlife concession area on the western border of Etosha National Park. Here they operated a very successful wildlife lodge for 21 years. From here, leaving his competent wife Louise in control, Steve guided many specialized eco- and ornithological tours throughout Namibia.

Steve guided for several different companies during this period such as Wild Wings, Green Tours, Zegrahm Eco Expeditions and Birdquest. After a tragic fire at Hobatere Lodge in January 2011, the family lost many of their personal possessions, photographs and many years' of data. Shortly after this, Steve became involved with Batis Birding Safaris.

During the past ten years Steve and his wife have travelled extensively doing birding and photography. Angola then also became a favorite destination because of the excellent birding opportunities the country has to offer.

Steve has passed his on-going enthusiasm and love for natural history to his two sons who now assist with birding, wildlife and photographic tours.

Steve would like to see Batis Birding growing into a highly specialized niche especially within Namibia, not only from a birding point of view but in general ecology and conservation as well.

Sean Braine & Dayne Braine - Guides

Both Sean and Dayne were born while Steve was working in the Skeleton Coast Park as a ranger and they had the privilege of growing up in this pristine wilderness area.

Sean, the eldest, after completing his studies worked as a fly-fishing and bird guide at a lodge on the Zambezi River in the eastern Caprivi. He was then promoted and was transferred to a lodge on the Kwando River where he managed the lodge for three years. From here, Sean led specialized birding trips as well as doing guided walks with big game. He has also done specialized birding tours for Birding Holidays in the Caprivi and Botswana, the area in which he has developed a thorough understanding of the environment and especially the diverse bird life as well as wildlife of this region.

Dayne the youngest, on the other hand is a qualified commercial pilot but opted to do land based safaris. He has led several coastal and desert birding tours. He has also done birding in the United States, Australia and Borneo and has travelled extensively in Southern Africa including Angola, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Botswana and South Africa.

Dayne and Sean grew up during their teens in the unspoiled wilderness and wildlife area of the Hobatere concession. After their studies, both boys eventually joined Steve and Louise at the Hobatere Lodge and gained invaluable experience in the tourism industry. While here, invaluable experience was gained doing wildlife guiding and the general hospitality trade. Both Dayne and Sean are keen photographers and both have found their own niche in the photographic world within Namibia.

They are passionate and enthusiastic about the bush and cannot wait to share this enthusiasm with others.

Angola Tours

Angola has only recently been opened to birders, and only few birding outlets operate within the country presently, this being due to bad roads and poor infrastructure, however, conditions are improving constantly.

Batis Birding offers the birder a full Angola itinerary to search for some of the most wanted species on the African continent.

Due to the present paucity of good accommodation establishments in the rural areas, Batis Birding offers good, basic, wild camping throughout the safari in Angola, yet, having said this, the large diversity and amount of endemics to be seen will make this safari well worth it.

Australia: Kangaroos and Cockatoos

Tour Leader John Lötter and local guides Hennie Ferreira and Anton Booysen from Queensland Australia will lead you on adventurous birding and bird photographic safaris in the Land Down Under with camping safaris in the Outback on request.

Australia is about the size of Africa and impossible to bird the whole country in one trip. We have designed a couple of safari options for Queensland, one of Australia's top birding destinations with more than a 100 endemic birds and mammals found nowhere else.

New Zealand: Kiwi and Takahe

Tour Leader John Lötter who lived in New Zealand (2003 – 2006) and local guides Hennie Feireira and Anton Booysen from Queensland, Australia will lead you on a unique birding and bird photographic safari to the North and South Islands of New-Zealand.

Although New-Zealand does not have the numbers, it certainly has the uniqueness; flightless birds that in the absence of mammals substitute the niches of mammals like moles, mice and hare, some living under rocks, others like the elusive Kiwi in burrows under the ground.

Join us on a pelagic between North Island and the Tiri-tiri Matangi bird sanctuary and a pelagic between Wellington and Picton on our way to the South Island.

Eastern Zimbabwe and Central Mozambique: Robberts Prinia, Angola Pitta and Green-headed Oriole

Zimbabwe is quickly busy recovering from the devastating dictatorship of Zano PF-but this has not influenced the Zimbabwe people who I personally recon as one some of Africa's friendliest people.

The spectacular Eastern Highlands-already part of the great African Rift is home to endemic and near endemic birds like Robberts's Warbler, Chirinda Apalis and many other localized species such as Sweinerton's Robin and Zambezi Indogobird.

The Eastern Highlands are a feast to the eye with spectacular views, botanical gardens, a world class golf course and tee plantations where Lesser Seadcracker and Anchieta's Tchagra are amongst the many superb birds that can be found here.

Mozambique is one of my personal favourite African destinations, with wonderful people, ample seafood, white beaches with Palm trees and tropical reefs with colourful fish to be explored with snorkelling gear. I actually wrote and just published a book about my 2007 safari and the accompanying adventure when our vehicle broke down and we survived for 20 days with the help of local people.

We will focus on Mnt. Gorongoza home to the Green-headed Oriole, the Southern Zambezi mouth region for the illusive Angola Pitta. The area north of Beira is best for East-coast Akalat, Locust Finch and Black-headed Apalis.

On our way to Maputo we will explore the last remnants of once pristine Miombo woodland for Olive-headed Weaver.

Batis Birding
Day Trips

We offer full day, half day and night tours to search for the only endemic species within the country, the dune adapted Dune Lark as well as other near-endemics such as Gray's Lark, Benguella Long-billed Lark, Rüppell's Korhaan and Herero Chat. Besides the birding, the Namib offers a huge diversity of arid adapted reptiles, insects and plant life. The Batis guides are trained in the general ecology of the desert and special care is taken to protect and keep the sensitive eco system intact. Day trips offered from Swakopmund will normally be short distances and seldom be longer than 200km, however, should there be a request for species such as Benguella Long-billed Lark or Herero Chat, a distance up to 450km may be covered.

What to bring: Walking shoes, sun block cream, binoculars, hat and warm clothing. Important note: The temperatures while being extremely hot during the day may plunge rapidly, this is due to the prevailing wind off the Atlantic ocean off the cold Benguella current where the moist air meets the warm desert air and then condenses. This phenomenon is also vital to all the life forms of the Namib Desert. During the Namibian winter winds from the interior termed "berg winds" or "east winds" bringing hot air which is collected from the interior through the desert to the coastline and subsequently temperatures during this time can become extreme along the coast.

The Namib Desert and uniquely adapted fauna and flora that live in this arid environment offers excellent photographic opportunities and you will discover that there is a lot more to the Namib Desert than just the big 5.

If you'd like to know more about what we do, and find out directly how we can help your photographic needs, then get in touch!
