Eco Dune Tour

This tour takes you from the Swakop River southwards to the east of the main dune fields to the Kuiseb River.  The possible birds we may encounter  in the desert are Gray’s Lark, Tractrac Chat and Red-capped Lark, occasionally raptors like Rock Kestrel, Jackal Buzzard, Pale-chanting Goshawk and Blackchested Snake Eagle, however we will concentrate on searching for the Namaqua Chameleon, Desert Sand Lizards including the Namib’s unique Shovel-snouted Lizard, FitzSimmons’ Burrowing Skink and with luck the sidewinding Peringuey’s Adder uniquely adapted to mastering the huge sand dunes of the Namib Desert.   On the adjacent gravel plains, we may encounter Horned Adders, Namib Sand Snakes and Common Namib Day Geckos.

In the main river courses because of the vegetation and flowering plants other birds which we may encounter are Black-chested Prinia, Bokmakierie, White-backed Mousebird, Cape Sparrow, Rock Martin, and the only endemic to the country, the Dune Lark of the Kuiseb dunes.  Here we will also search for the Wedge-snouted Desert Lizard and a host of interesting desert beetles.  The Kuiseb also has huge “Nara” hummock’s a native wild melon which is naturally harvested by the local people on a semi-commercial basis, this unique plant has modified leaves which form spines so as to reduce transpiration, but besides this the plant’s fruits are eaten by a variety of animals such as Oryx, Black-backed Jackal and Brown Hyhaena.
